Title: Nightworld Academy: Term One
Author: L.J. Swallow
Genre: Paranormal
Rating: 2.5 / 5
# pages: Audiobook ~9hrs
Date read: September 2024

Welcome to the Nightworld Academy, attended by vampires, shifters, and witches. A place filled with harmony and mutual respect between the supernatural races. Sometimes.

I'm told my curse is a gift. A valuable one that could cost me my life. My visions of the future are weird, but my new school is weirder. All lessons take place in the evening and the majority of students are on an advanced program where they take extra classes late into the night. I enrolled at the academy because my last school expelled me for punching another student. Nobody believed that I knocked Tyler unconscious to stop somebody else dying. But why would they believe the crazy girl?

I expected to meet other troubled teens here, but the pupils are predictable for an English boarding school. There's Ash, the rugby team captain and the academy's most popular guy. Then there's Andrei, the moody guy with a bad attitude who takes pleasure in annoying me. And Jamie who's studious and friendly but intense. I thought I had the academy figured out: the mean girl, the quirky friend, the nerd, the emo, and the jock. But on the evening I swear allegiance to my new school house, everything spins out of control and I realise I'm dealing with more. Much more. One of us will die, and I know who.

Hard book to review. I mostly liked it, I think? I liked the characters, I liked the setting, I liked the "coming into her powers" trope ... but at the end of the day, there wasn't really anything new to it. It was a story that had been told - and told better - before. I liked the school, but thought too little page time was given to the classes. I liked the characters, but the animosity of the mean girls wasn't really explained. I liked Maeve's powers, but her hesitancy to tell anybody about them seemed unnecessary.

Mostly though, nothing seemed resolved at the end of the book! I thought it was - but then the author threw a cliffhanger at me at the very last minute.

So 2.5 stars - rounded up on Goodreads, because I really did enjoy it for most of the time I listened to it.

Title: Snowflakes and Cinnamon Swirls at the Winter Wonderland
Author: Heidi Swain
Genre: Christmas, Chick-lit
Rating: 4/5
# pages: 400
Date read: December, 2018

After calling off her engagement, Hayley, the Wynthorpe Hall housekeeper, wants nothing more than to return to her no-strings fun-loving self, avoiding any chance of future heartbreak. Little does she know, Wynbridge’s latest arrival is about to throw her plan entirely off course . . .

Moving into Wynthorpe Hall to escape the town’s gossip, Hayley finds herself immersed in the eccentric Connelly family’s festive activities as they plan to host their first ever Winter Wonderland. But Hayley isn’t the only new resident at the hall. Gabe, a friend of the Connelly’s son Jamie, has also taken up residence, moving into Gatekeeper’s Cottage, and he quickly makes an impression on Wynbridge’s reformed good-girl.

As preparations commence for the biggest event of the season, the pair find themselves drawn ever closer to one another, but unbeknownst to Hayley, Gabe, too, has a reason for turning his back on love, one that seems intent on keeping them apart.

Under the starry winter skies, will Gabe convince Hayley to open her heart again once more? And in doing so, will he convince himself?

Honestly? I bought this because I couldn't resist the title :-D

A really sweet Christmas story. At times it was perhaps just a tad too twee, but for Christmas stories, that's allowed (even if I might roll my eyes at it at other times of the year). I liked that the story was all Christmas instead of just having a few chapters focus on it, and would have loved to visit the Winter Wonderland they set up.

I did feel like hitting Anna and Molly from time to time... for best friends, they were awfully pushy! I probably would have responded much like Hayley did, but still - as an outside reader, it bugged me. On the other hand, I'm really glad Hayley didn't allow Gabe's assumptions to fester. That could have been REALLY frustrating, but was nipped in the bud, which I appreciated.

All in all, a charming read, and I'll definitely check out more of Heidi Swain's books.... especially as many of them seem to revolve around the same characters :-D

Title: Kiss and Spell (Enchanted Inc #7)
Author: Shanna Swendson
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 3/5
# pages: 284
Date read: December 2016

When a freak accident leaves Katie Chandler with magical powers, it seems like a wish come true for the former magical immune. But it also means she's vulnerable to magic, just when the dangerous Elf Lord is cooking up another scheme in his bid for power. Anyone who gets in his way disappears--including Katie and her wizard boyfriend, Owen Palmer.

Now Katie's under a spell that obscures her true identity, living a life right out of a romantic comedy movie in a Hollywood set version of New York. Will she be able to find her true Mr. Right in time to break the spell with a kiss and warn everyone, or will she be trapped forever, unaware of the doom facing her world?

So far the last book in the series (although book 8 is due out December 2016), and with a very nice ending indeed :) The book itself was rather slow-moving however, so I think it's probably just as well Shanna Swendson ended the series here. I just couldn't get as interested in the plot as I would have liked.

I did enjoy the chapters just after Kate woke up in 'not New York' though (and loved how that was handled - for a minute there, I wondered if I'd opened up a wrong book on my Kindle!), and reading about how she slowly caught on to the fact that something odd was happening. I also really liked Florence :-) We saw far too little of her once Kate and Owen started plotting again.

Title: No Quest for the Wicked (Enchanted Inc. #6)
Author: Shanna Swendson
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 3/5
# pages: 278 pages
Date read: August, 2016

Now that the Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. team has defeated the nefarious Spellworks, the only "competition" in town, Katie Chandler doesn't have much to do as director of marketing, and she's starting to question her role at MSI. Her boyfriend Owen Palmer, on the other hand, is in hog heaven, translating an ancient and powerful magical manuscript.

But then he finds that the cryptic text describing the location of an enchanted gem known as the Eye of the Moon has radically changed. This deadly stone gives its holder enhanced power over others and a craving for more power. It once caused a terrible war before it was safely hidden and then lost - and now it seems to be in New York and set in an elven brooch that renders its wearer invulnerable. Whoever has this brooch could take over the world.

Katie and Owen must find it before anyone else does, and they're not the only ones searching. They'll need all the help they can get, including Katie's visiting grandmother. But who can they trust when their allies fall under its spell? Not to mention the new enemies who are deadlier than anything they've faced before.

After a bit of a break I've returned to this series, as they really do make for perfect plane reading. I still love reading about Katie, Owen and all their friends (Katie's grandmother especially - she's delightful!), but must admit that the plot itself in this one didn't really do it for me. It was one long hunt that seemed like it could have been planned better and executed more efficiently. I did enjoy the return of Katie's evil ex-boss though. She's so delightfully despicable (something I can only enjoy as I know she won't get away with it).

I still enjoyed reading it, as Shanna Swendson really has a way with words, but it was more to get to spend more time with the characters, than because I was all that interested in what was going on. A bit strange to read a book in spite of the plot instead of because of it, but it kept my attention nicely on an insomniac red-eye flight.

Title: The Nest
Author: Cynthia D'Aprix Sweetney
Genre: Fiction
Rating: 3/5
# pages: 373 pages
Date read: August, 2016

Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs joint trust fund, “The Nest,” which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems.

Melody, a wife and mother in an upscale suburb, has an unwieldy mortgage and looming college tuition for her twin teenage daughters. Jack, an antiques dealer, has secretly borrowed against the beach cottage he shares with his husband, Walker, to keep his store open. And Bea, a once-promising short-story writer, just can’t seem to finish her overdue novel. Can Leo rescue his siblings and, by extension, the people they love? Or will everyone need to reimagine the future they’ve envisioned? Brought together as never before, Leo, Melody, Jack, and Beatrice must grapple with old resentments, present-day truths, and the significant emotional and financial toll of the accident, as well as finally acknowledge the choices they have made in their own lives.

I browsed through the first few chapters at a bookstore and found myself strangely intrigued, despite the fact that the blurb on the back of the book hadn't really caught my fancy. Still, I couldn't stop thinking about it, and ended up getting hold of an e-copy a few days later.

Once again, this is a character-driven narrative rather than a plot-driven one. The plot itself is very quickly explained, but the people themselves - this highly dysfunctional family - are fascinating. I found myself putting the book down frequently, as I could see this person or that heading towards a bad decision, but I kept picking it back up, as I grew to care about the siblings, and had to know how everything got resolved.

An intriguing read about people I grew to care about... but am not really sure I like very much.

Title: Much Ado About Magic (Enchanted Inc. #5)
Author: Shanna Swendson
Genre: Fantasy / Paranormal
Rating: 4/5
# pages: 298
Date read: November, 2015

Katie Chandler is back in New York and at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. - and just in time. The city's in the grip of a magical crime wave from spells that wizarding whiz Owen Palmer thinks look awfully familiar, and the rogue firm Spellworks is raising its profile in the magical world by selling protective amulets. It's Katie's job as the new director of marketing for MSI to fight this battle of public perception while Owen and the other wizards try to uncover what's really going on.

What Katie doesn't realize is that her idea to stage a showcase for MSI's magical achievements is playing right into a devious plot more than three decades in the making. Now Katie has to do damage control that has nothing to do with marketing. To save the magical world, she'll have to prove who the real enemy is, and doing that will require digging deeper into Owen's mysterious past than he wants anyone to go. If she fails, she not only stands to lose a magical war, but she could also lose the man she loves.

That's more like it :) Next to the first book in the series, I think this is my favourite :) It did bother me slightly that we hadn't really heard of the council before this book (or if we had, I'd forgotten all about it), as it did seem a bit out of the blue the way the men in black (no relation) suddenly showed up.

I loved Katie's character development, and thought she really seemed to come into her own in this book. I wish Owen had believed her earlier, but can understand why he didn't.

The final confrontation seemed a tad rushed, but the ending itself threw me for a loop - I had not seen that coming! Will be very interesting to see what happens next.

Does anybody know if book 7 is meant to be the last one, or if she just hasn't published anything since 2013?

Title: Don't Hex with Texas (Enchanted Inc. #4)
Author: Shanna Swendson
Genre: Fantasy / Paranormal
Rating: 3.5/5
# pages: 292
Date read: November, 2015

Katie Chandler has fled fast-paced Manhattan and returned home to a simpler life, working at her family's feed-and-seed store in Cobb, Texas. In a painfully selfless gesture, Katie had left the sexy wizard Owen Palmer to battle his demons in the magical realm - after all, Katie just seemed to attract evil, which only made Owen's job a lot harder. But now it seems that trouble has followed her home: Despite the fact that Merlin, Katie's old boss at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., has assured her that Cobb is free of enchantment, (magically speaking), Katie begins to notice curious phenomena.

Cobb is being plagued by a series of inexplicable petty crimes and other devilish mischief, and after her experiences in Manhattan, Katie knows unauthorized magic when she sees it. As this new darkness strikes deep in the heart of Texas, Owen appears (literally) to investigate. Now Katie's friends and family must show the bad guys why it's bad luck to hex with Texas, while Katie and Owen combine their strengths like never before to uncover a sinister plot before evil takes root in the Lone Star State.

Book 4 almost manages to recapture the charm of the first book in the series. Katie is back in Texas to get away from magic... only to discover that there's more magic around than she had ever anticipated, and her desire to keep her family out of the loop is perhaps not as easily managed as first anticipated.

I loved seeing Katie relate to more people than just Owen, and was pleased to meet her family and friends back in Texas. I do still want her to return to New York, but for a bit of a change, this was very enjoyable. And I love her granny!

Title: Damsel Under Stress (Enchanted Inc. #3)
Author: Shanna Swendson
Genre: Fantasy / Paranormal
Rating: 3.5/5
# pages: 320
Date read: November, 2015

At last, Owen Palmer, the dreamboat wizard at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., has conjured up the courage to get Katie Chandler under the mistletoe at the office holiday party. But just when it looks like Katie has found her prince, in pops her inept fairy godmother, Ethelinda, to throw a wand into the works. Ethelinda's timing couldn't be worse. A plot hatched by MSI's rogue ex-employees, Idris and his evil fairy gal pal Ari, threatens to expose the company's secrets - and the very existence of magic itself. Even worse, it could also mean the end of Katie's happily-ever-after.

Now Katie and Owen must work side by side (but alas, not cheek to cheek) to thwart the villains' plans. Braving black-magic-wielding sorceresses, subway-dwelling dragons, lovelorn frog princes, and even the dreaded trip to meet Owen's parents at Christmas, Katie and her beau are in a battle to beat Idris at his own sinister game. All mischief and matters of the heart will come to a head at a big New Year's Eve gala, when the crystal ball will drop, champagne will pour, and Katie will find herself truly spellbound.

Better than book two, still not as good as book one. The fairy Godmother got on my nerves (I'm really, really not fond of people who believe they always know best, contrary to all evidence), but I was less frustrated with Katie for not telling Owen and/or Merlin what was going on than I was in book 2. Especially since once something serious happened she DID tell them right away.

I did absolutely love Katie visiting Owen's parents for Christmas! I think that may have been my favourite part of the book.

Basically these books make for good entertainment, but (apart from possibly the first one) they're probably not books I'd care to reread.

I still want to read the next book in the series though!

Title: Once Upon Stilettos (Enchanted, Inc. #2)
Author: Shanna Swendson
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 3/5
# pages: 320
Date read: November, 2015

Katie Chandler's life is pure magic - literally. As an executive assistant at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., she's seen more than her share of fantastical occurrences. A mere Manhattan mortal, Katie is no wizard, but she's a wiz at exposing "hokum" pocus, cloaked lies, and deceptive enchantments. And she's fallen under the all-too-human spell of attraction to Owen, a hunky wizard and coworker. Owen, however, is preoccupied. Someone has broken into his office and disrupted top-secret files, and it reeks of an inside job. CEO Merlin (yes, the Merlin) and taps Katie and her special ability to uncover the magical mole.

Keeping her feelings in check while sleuthing alongside Owen, Katie is shocked to discover that her immunity to magic is waning, putting her in grave danger. Soon she's surrendering to the charms and enchantments of everyone and everything around her, including a killer pair of red stilettos. Katie must now conjure up her natural instincts to get to the bottom of the break-in, regain her power, and win the wizard of her dreams.

Unfortunately not nearly as good as the first book in the series, and parts of it really annoyed me. It really bugs me when a main character - especially in a first person narrative - insists on making poor decisions and keeping things secret when they could so obviously spare themselves a load of problems by just talking about it!

It was still charming enough to make me keep going though, and fortunately the ending was satisfying enough that I could mostly forgive it for making me read through such stupidity. I do hope Katie will be wiser in the next book though.

Title: Enchanted, Inc (Enchanted, Inc. #1)
Author: Shanna Swendson
Genre: Fantasy
Rating: 4/5
# pages: 320
Date read: November, 2015

Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there. Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie is afraid she's a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn't help.

Then, seemingly out of the blue, Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company that tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie's ordinariness is an asset. Lacking any bit of magic, she can easily spot a fake spell, catch hidden clauses in competitor's contracts, and detect magically disguised intruders. Suddenly, average Katie is very special indeed.

She quickly learns that office politics are even more complicated when your new boss is a real ogre, and you have a crush on the sexy, shy, ultra powerful head of the R&D department, who is so busy fighting an evil competitor threatening to sell black magic on the street that he seems barely to notice Katie. Now it's up to Katie to pull off the impossible: save the world and - hopefully - live happily ever after.

An interesting twist to the standard modern-day fantasy. I loved the idea of some people being completely immune to magic, and that that ability would be of value to actual magical beings.

There isn't really much plot to the book, but it's charming and interestingly written and made for the perfect plane reading.
